Watch: Destruction in Pakistan after Flash Floods
314 Fatalities Caused by Flooding in Pakistan
Flash floods in northwest Pakistan have wreaked havoc on the region, causing widespread destruction. Since Friday, at least 314 people have perished in the flooding, with the majority of deaths occurring in Pakistan's Buner district. Officials cite a rare cloudburst as the culprit, which caused more than 100 millimeters (4 inches) of rain to fall on the area in just one hour.
The Human Impact
The flash floods have caused homes and vehicles to be swept away and have displaced scores of residents. Many have lost everything they own and are now seeking shelter in government-run relief camps. Relief officials have appealed for donations of goods and money to help those affected.
Continued Threat
Scientists attribute these catastrophic events to climate change. This poses a persistent threat to the region as the country continues to experience heavy downpours and fluctuating weather patterns.
