Man faces jail time for smuggling 850 turtles in socks to Hong Kong
Turtles trespassing across borders
A man in the US could face jail time after authorities found over 850 tiny turtles concealed in his socks at Hong Kong's airport. Steven Lay, a US citizen, was arrested after customs officials discovered he was carrying more than 800 turtles, weighing about 134 pounds (60 kilograms), strapped to his body under his clothes. Each turtle weighed less than an ounce. Mr. Lay, who lives in the state of Florida, was arrested on suspicion of violating wildlife laws, and the animals were seized.
Turtles a popular pet
The Indian Star tortoise is popular in the pet trade because it can live up to about 50 years and is known for its distinctive star-like shell.
