Flash floods kill more than 160 in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir
160 people have died as a result of flash floods in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
Intense monsoon rains that began on August 11 have caused flooding, landslides, and property damage in the region. According to Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority, 163 people have died and 537 have been injured. Over 30,000 homes have been destroyed and more than 7,000 livestock have been lost.
Rescue and relief efforts
The Pakistan Army and paramilitary troops have been deployed to help with rescue and relief efforts. They are providing emergency shelter, food, and other necessary items to those affected. The country's Meteorology Department has also been issuing alerts to local districts to provide early warning of potential heavy rainfall and flooding.
Climate change contribution
While it is difficult to attribute a single extreme weather event to climate change, scientists have repeatedly warned that such events are expected to increase in frequency and intensity as Earth's atmosphere continues to warm. Certain regions, like the South Asia region, are expected to be affected by more intense monsoons in the future.
